How To Introduce Your Child To Flashcards

June 07, 2021

Whether your child is aged 1 or aged 4, introducing them to a new concept of learning may not be as easy as it looks.

Here are a few tips on how to do so:

  • I recommend that when you first introduce your little one to flashcards, give the session a fun name (I use 'Flashcard Fun Time' for my boys' sessions) and ensure that they have a nice quiet little spot at home where there are no distractions.

  • It may be a good idea to only bring out a few flashcards at once (3 or 4) so that they are not overwhelmed with all the different colours, pictures and shapes of an entire pack.

  • Once the flashcards are placed in front of them, try using a few words to introduce the topic. For example, to introduce alphabet flashcards, point to the letter and say "This is a" then point to the picture and say "is for apple".

For all children's comprehension, less is more and it is important not to overwhelm them. In doing so, they may respond negatively to the idea of 'Flashcard Fun Time' as I like to call it.
